I believe that to some degree this school is a bit cliquey within races as well as sports groups as well. In terms of race groups, sometimes I feel that the cliques are formed because of the shared experience of certain groups, as well as similar locations and backgrounds. There aren’t really any resources specifically for black students, but there are a few resources for minority groups. The professional staff who are in charge of the cultural clubs on campus are working to provide a safe space for black students to share their experience at Drew, as well as to talk about a wide variety of topics that are prevalent within the community. As a black woman, I do not feel represented at my school. There really isn’t anyone who has a position of power on campus who identifies with my specific identity, and I feel like there aren’t enough black women voices that are speaking up on campus. Our school provides certain events and funding to cultural clubs to provide spaces for students of color to convene, as well as expressing that if there are any problems on campus to report them to the res life department, but in terms of support through representation, there isn’t any. I wish that there were more black professional staff, as well as actually addressing certain issues on campus where students feel uncomfortable. Please make sure that if you feel uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to express that. Your school should be able to make you feel safe and provide you with a space to grow not only as a student but as a black student.
