Plus, I wanted to be around students who were just like me. Now, I wouldn’t change my decision. Being at an HBCU allowed me to embrace my culture even more as well as acknowledge that I can compete on any level if I would have considered other colleges. I felt represented. All students in the school have access to counselors and other support staff throughout the school and district. That said, I wish they would teach more black history. Future students, remember to embrace your culture. Be yourself in any room. Research. Ask questions.

Going to an institution where I am celebrated (and not just tolerated) that would foster my servant leadership amongst successful Black professionals and other incredible Black students was a priority for me when deciding where I would begin my life’s next greatest chapter. My greatest advice for prospective college students is to remember that you are your greatest competition. Your peers will be outstanding individuals who seem to be super-students who seem to be able to achieve any and everything. This does not diminish your capabilities or achievements! Know that YOU are your greatest competition and that you are running your own race.
